Port St Mary is the fourth in the series of villages on the Isle of Man to be preserved for the future in an archive photography project. Photography took place on 13th-15th August 2013. As with Peel 2011, Port Erin 2012, and Laxey 2012, shops, businesses and organisations around the village have been photographed and interviewed and the results will be preserved in the Manx Museum and on this website.
The project is led by archivephotography.co.uk, and funding is kindly provided by the Manx Heritage Foundation and Chris Littler Webdesign. Further assistance is required to support this project. If you can help out, please get in touch.
Inspiration for this project came from both old and new. The old being a handful of photographs of shopkeepers stood proudly outside their premises in days gone by. The new being a number of web-based projects to provide a photographic account of shop fronts in particular areas, notably London Shop Fronts.
This project is unique in that it captures all the businesses in a town at a particular point in time, and carefully records information about the businesses. Crucially, all the data are preserved in museums as well as online, to ensure that project is a valuable documentary reference in years to come.
